What Are Lipids And Why Are They Important For Hair Health?

Suffering from dry, damaged hair?

Lipids are natural oils that play a vital role in maintaining healthy hair. They coat the hair shaft, forming a protective barrier that locks in moisture, prevents breakage, and adds shine. However, various factors, including heat styling, chemical treatments, and environmental aggressors, can deplete hair of its natural lipids.

Hair Lipids & the Lipid Complex Treatment — Your Questions, Answered

What exactly are hair lipids?

Lipids are the natural fats and oils built into every strand — they live in the cuticle and the cell membrane complex that glues the cuticle layers together. They keep hair flexible, sealed, and shiny. Coloring, heat styling, sun, and even hard water strip them away, which is when hair starts to feel dry, rough, and brittle.

How do you restore lipids in hair?

Washing alone can't put lipids back — most conditioners only coat the surface. Restoring them takes a treatment formulated to deposit lipids into the hair fiber itself. That is exactly what the two-phase Lipid Complex Hair Treatment was designed for in the salon, and now at home.

Lipids vs. protein vs. keratin — what does my hair need?

Protein (including keratin) rebuilds the hair's internal structure; lipids restore its seal, slip, and shine. Over-proteined hair turns stiff and snaps; lipid-depleted hair frizzes, tangles, and looks dull. Most damaged hair needs both — but if your hair feels dry and rough rather than gummy and weak, lipids are the missing piece.

What is the Lipid Complex Hair Treatment?

It's a two-phase at-home treatment developed at Tomy B. Salon to repair, revive, and revitalize damaged hair. As the lipid-rich formula is applied, it penetrates the hair shaft, delivering lipids and amino acids directly where they're needed most — repairing damage from within and restoring your hair's natural moisture barrier so strands come out stronger, smoother, and shinier.

What's inside the treatment?

A carefully chosen blend of natural and advanced ingredients: lipids to nourish and rebuild the hair's moisture barrier, keratin to strengthen and protect strands, panthenol for hydration and shine, and antioxidants to guard against further damage. It's free of the harsh sulfates that strip color — the full ingredient list is on the product page.

How do I apply it at home?

Start with a gentle shampoo to remove buildup, then towel-dry your hair. Apply Part 1 generously from roots to ends and let it work for 10–15 minutes. Apply Part 2 directly on top, comb through to remove any tangles, and let it process for at least 10 more minutes. Rinse thoroughly — there's no need to shampoo or condition afterward — and style as usual.

How often should I do a lipid treatment?

Once a month. That's the same monthly rhythm we use at Tomy B. Salon on Long Island, where this formula was developed — one treatment a month is all damaged or color-treated hair needs to stay soft, sealed, and shiny. It also works beautifully as a follow-up right after coloring or highlighting.

Is it safe for color-treated hair?

Yes — it's gentle on color-treated hair and safe for all hair types. Because it's free of harsh chemicals and sulfates that can strip color, it actually helps keep your color looking vibrant and salon-fresh between appointments.

Can I get it on subscription?

Yes. A monthly subscription delivers a fresh treatment to your door in time for your once-a-month application, so you never run out — and subscribers always get the best price.
